7% of the cancers in the UK are haematological and are made up of cancers affecting the bone marrow, the blood and the lymphatic system; they include multiple myeloma, leukaemias and lymphomas. Because of their nature, haematological malignancies can cause widespread problems and therefore require systemic chemotherapy either orally or intravenously. Neutropenia can cause sepsis, and is a huge risk factor of chemotherapy; this generally occurs 7-10 days post chemotherapy.
